BREEAM AND CODE FOR SUSTAINABLE HOMES

As the demand for industry and housing rises with the increasing population, care must be taken to ensure that new buildings consume minimal environmental resources throughout their construction and lifetime. The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methods (BREEAM) and Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) aim to ensure that new developments and houses have a reduced impact on the environment and improved all-round sustainability.
BL Ecology Ltd provides BREEAM and Code assessments and reports for the Ecology / Land Use and Ecology category. Our specialist staff exceed the requirements for a Suitably Qualified Ecologist as specified by the BRE guidelines, guaranteeing that our BREEAM / Code surveys and reports hold the utmost integrity.
The rating of a new house under CfSH Ecology is determined by the achievement of credit points through satisfying particular conditions or standards during construction. Under the new 2018 scheme credit points for Ecology are awarded based on the following criteria:
-
Site selection (2 credits);
-
The current ecological value of the site and management of risks and opportunities (up to 2 credits);
-
Management of negative impacts on ecology (up to 3 credits);
-
Change in the ecological value of the site; and
-
Enhancement of the ecology on site.
Some credit points can only be achieved following a site visit and report by a Suitably Qualified Ecologist. During the site visit, a UK Habitat (UK Hab) assessment will be conducted to evaluate the ecology on site and the likely level of impact of the development.
BL Ecology will then produce a report to outline the number of credit points available, recommendations for protection and enhancement of the ecology on site, and advice on achieving additional credit points. BL Ecology’s BREEAM and Code reports are clear and informative and are produced in line with BRE guidelines. We can alternatively fill out the GN13 form
With a wide range of experience on projects ranging from single houses to large industrial developments, BL Ecology can provide a fast, clear and professional BREEAM or Code service which greatly benefits the environment and developers alike. Undertaking a BREEAM or CfSH Ecology assessment with the support of BL Ecology’s experience and expertise can be a straightforward and cost-effective way to maximise the rating of a development.
